METRO Romania opened its first store in October 1996 , being the first company to introduce a new sales system, cash&carry, on the Romanian market. The company has always been committed to offering a diverse range of products that cater to the needs of professional customers, such as hotels, restaurants, catering (HoReCa) businesses, and independent retailers, with a focus on providing excellent quality at a reasonable price. In April 2010, METRO launched a new concept, METRO Punct, a store specially designed to support Resellers and HoReCa customers. Today, the METRO Cash & Carry Romania network has 30 distribution centers, including 5 METRO Punct stores, with a total sales area of approximately 190,000 square meters.
METRO Romania was searching for a sustainable solution to replace stretch film in its operations. They needed a strong but ergonomic solution to retrofit on their roll cages.
The customer tested first textile doors but they did not meet all the requirements. Metal add-on doors were chosen to convert the 2-sided Compactainer® to a 4-sided model. METRO Romania's decision was based on the results of all the tests, which proved that metal add-on doors were more cost-effective and sustainable. The longer lifecycle, reparability, and ease of maintenance compared to textile doors made metal add-on doors the better option. This saves 130 tons of stretch foil annually.
The first Compactainer® units were ordered in 2017. Currently, more than 6,000 2-sided Compactainers are in use. Metal add-on doors were chosen to convert the 2-sided Compactainer® in use into a 4-sided model making their operations more ergonomic and environmental-friendly.
